Beta Reading
I offer professional Beta reading services for adult genre fiction, YA fiction and popular nonfiction.
Adult Genre Fiction: My specialties are in science fiction, fantasy of all types, crime and mystery (please send me your international crime stories!) and romance, from the coziest to the spiciest of erotica.
Adult Nonfiction: Cooking, animals, travel, memoirs
YA and Middle Grade: any science fiction, fantasy or speculative type of fiction.
With 15 years experience as a librarian and professor of library science, I can tell you if readers will like your book, and if librarians will want to buy it and recommend to their patrons. I have been reviewing fiction since 2005, primarily for professional library publications; for a couple of years I read and reviewed every single cat based mystery and every single Scandinavian crime story. I've edited and contributed to 4 books about working with readers in a library setting, and given dozens of presentations on working with readers. I've taught multiple classes on reader services in libraries and genre fiction studies, which focus on understanding why readers enjoy reading. This experience makes me a great beta reader as I have years of professional knowledge and experience to draw on and have an excellent understanding of what makes for a great reading experience. As a reader I've been deeply immersed in science fiction and fantasy for over 30 years, and for as long as I can remember I've read at least 125 books every year; I've kept track of all my reading since 2002. I've started and managed several bookgroups over the years and for 5 years wrote a column with Kaite Mediatore Stover about popular media for readers and librarians called "Under the Radar."
